올드 도미니언 대학교(Old Dominion University)의 교수로, 상담학과 특임 교수(Endowed Chair of Counseling)이다. 그는 상담 이론 발전을 위한 국제 연구소(International Institute for the Advancement of Counseling Theory)의 상임이사를 맡고 있다. National Organization of Human Services로부터 두 차례 회장상을 수상했으며, American Counseling Association의 최고 명예 회원(Fellow)이다.
