한국외국어대학교 영어과를 졸업하고 동대학교 대학원에서 영어학 박사학위를 받았다. 현재 한국외국어대학교 세미오시스연구센터에서 HK교수로 재직하고 있다. 주요 논문으로는 「Negotiating common ground in discourse: a diachronic and discpurse analysis of maliya」(2013); 「On the development of Korean ‘SAY’ evidentials and their extended pragmatic function」(2014); 「Evidentiality in interaction: A pragmatic analysis of Korean hearsay evidential markers」(2015); 「Emotion in interaction: A diachronic and pragmatic analysis of the sentence-final particle-tani in Korean」(2016) 등이 있다. 주요 저서로는 『Emergence of Causality in Grammar』(2009); 『Semiosis of African American Religion』(2013) 등이 있다.
