네이선 D. 미첼은 St. Meinrad College(B. A.)와 Indiana University(M. A.)를 졸업했다. University of Notre Dame에서 박사 학위(Ph. D.)를 받았고, 동 대학교에서 예배학을 가르쳤다. 은퇴 후 명예 교수로서 동 대학교 부속 예전연구소에서 연구와 출판을 담당하는 부소장으로 일하고 있다. 1998년 북미 예전학회의 베라카 상을 수상했으며, 80년 전통의 저명한 저널 「예배」(Worship)의 편집장을 역임하였다.
