영국 더럼 대학교(University of Durham)에서 박사학위(Ph. D.)를 받았으며, 리치몬드 침례신학교(Richmond Baptist Theological Seminary) 신약학 교수이다. 스펜서는 누가복음에 관한 전문가로서 2012년에 누가복음 연구서 Salty Wives, Spirited Mothers, and Savvy Widows: Capable Women of Purpose and Persistence in Luke’s Gospel을 출간하였다. 2019년에 누가복음에 관한 주석서인 『누가복음』(Luke)을 출간할 예정이다.
