1994년 애덤 스미스 모교인 영국 글래스고 대학교 경제학과에서 「애덤 스미스의 형이상학과 과학」으로 박사학위를 받았다. 2000년 이후 성균관대학교 경제학과 교수로 재직하고 있으며, 2020년 대한민국 학술원상을 수상했다.
『애덤 스미스의 학문과 사상??(2005)과 『애덤 스미스: 정의가 번영을 이끈다??(2015), 『국부론과 애덤 스미스의 융합 학문??(2019) 등의 국내 저술을 출판했다. 또한 『도덕감정론??(2016)을 번역했고, 2026년 말 새로운 번역본 『국부론??을 출간할 예정이다. 한편 『융합 인지과학의 프런티어??(2010) 그리고 『애덤 스미스 경제학: 자연적 자유와 정의??(2025)를 공동 저술했다.
국내 주요 논문에 관한 한, 애덤 스미스를 중심으로 본 과학철학과 수사학적 방법론, 정치철학, 고전파경제학, 신제도주의 경제학, 법과 경제학, 조직경제학, 행동경제학, 행복경제학, 경제사 등에 관한 다수 연구를 진행했다.
