미국 컬럼비아대학교 비교문학과 사회연구소 소장이자 동아시아인문 석좌교수이며 중국 칭화대학교 인문대학 겸직 교수이기도 하다. 1990년 미국 하버드대학교에서 박사학위를 받았으며 1997년 미국 Guggenheim Fellowship 학술 대상을 수상했다. 학술 저작으로 『The Freudian Robot: Digital Media and the Future of the Unconscious』, 『충돌하는 제국The Clash of Empires』, Tokens of Exchange: The Problem of Translation in Global Circulations, 『언어 횡단적 실천Translingual Practice』 등과 중문저서 『六個字母的解法』 『語際書寫』 『跨語際實踐』 『帝國的話語政治』가 있다.
