데이비드 M. 카는 칼튼칼리지(Carleton College, B.A.), 캔들러신학대학교(Candler School of Theology at Emory University, M.T.S.), 클레어몬트대학원(Claremont Graduate School, Ph.D.)을 졸업했다. 현재 뉴욕의 유니온 신학교(Union Theological Seminary)의 구약학 교수며, 특히 히브리어 성경 본문 형성 연구에 있어서 선도적인 학자다. 저서로는 From D to Q: A Study of Early Jewish Interpretations of Solomon's Dream at Gibeon (1991), Reading the Fractures of Genesis: Historical and Literary Approaches (1996), The Erotic Word: Sexuality, Spirituality and the Bible (2003), Writing on the Tablet of the Heart: Origins of Western Scripture and Literature (2005), An Introduction to the Old Testament: Sacred Texts and Imperial Contexts of the Hebrew Bible (2010), The Formation of the Hebrew Bible: A New Reconstruction (2011), The Formation of Genesis 1-11: Biblical and Other Precursors (2020) 등이 있다.
