연세대학교에서 한국어교육 석사와 호주 맥콰리(Macquarie)대학교에서 응용언어학 석사로 졸업했고, 뉴사우스웨일즈대학교(UNSW)에서 언어학 박사학위를 받았다. 현재 UNSW 인문언어학부에서 한국학 교수로 재직 중이다. 대양주한국학회(KSAA) 총무이사 등 몇몇 학회 이사를 역임했고, 현재 국제한국어교육학회(IAKLE) 등 몇몇 학회의 학회지 편집위원, 호주연구재단(ARC) 평가위원 등으로 활동 중이다. 주요 연구 분야는 응용언어학과 사회언어학 분야이며, 한국어 주제의 언어습득, 언어교육과 학습, 오류분석, 다문화 사회 언어 사용, 계승어 관련 주제 등을 주로 연구한다. 논저로 Understanding L2 Korean Learner Errors: Description, Explanation and Implications (2017), Korean Language Education: Australian Practices and Perspectives (2018), Korean Heritage Language Maintenance, Learning and Development: Australian Practices and Perspectives (2019) 등이 있고, 논문으로 “Korean language learning in socio-educational settings in Sydney: Motivation, learning-styles and learning experiences” (2020), “Error Analysis” (2022), “Heritage language maintenance and education in Korean communities: Perspectives, challenges, and implications from three countries” (2023) 등이 있다.
