1949년 미주리대학 영문학/야생동물 보존으로 문학사.
1954년에 예일대 자연환경 보호/조경/미술사 부문의 학제적 주제로 박사. 피처 칼리지(Pitzer College)와 클레르몽 대학원(Claremont Graduate School) 교수로 재직, 자연 철학과 인간 생태론(Human Ecolgy)을 강의(1973~1994년).
