1981년 UC 버클리대학에서 산스끄릿 전공으로 학사 학위를, 1987년 브라운대학교에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 1986년 시카고대학교 교수가 되었으며, 2002년에는 파리 고등연구원(EPHE)의 동아시아문명연구소(CRCAO)로 자리를 옮겨 티벳학 연구팀을 이끌었다. 현재 파리 고등연구원 종교학부 명예교수이자 시카고대학교 신학대학원의 누마타 불교학 초빙교수(Numata Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies)로 재직하고 있다. 2018년 미국예술과학아카데미(American Academy of Arts and Sciences) 회원으로 선출되었으며, 학술지 『History of Religions』의 공동 편집자로 활동하고 있다.
주요 저서로는 『The Tibetan Assimilation of Buddhism: Conversion, Contestation and Memory』(2000), 『Reason’s Traces: Identity and Interpretation in Indian and Tibetan Buddhist Thought』(2001), 『The Tibetans』(2006), 『The Rise of Wisdom Moon』(2009), 『Tibetan Manuscripts and Early Printed Books』(2024) 등이 있다.
