음반소개

이 음반은 ‘국악과 재즈의 진지한 소통’을 모토로 2005년부터 꾸준히 활동해 오고 있는 스톤재즈의 6번째 정규앨범인 클래식 모음곡집이다. 2006년에 발표한 한국민요 (Crossover Korean Soul)를 시작으로 2007년 재즈스탠더드 (On Eastern Angle)와 캐롤 (More Snow), 2009년 월드팝 (The Beyonders) 그리고 2011년 가요와 트로트 (Bound up 緣)를 통해 거의 모든 대표적인 대중적 장르를 섭렵해오고 있는데, 이번 음반은 이들 시리즈 음반들중 최종판이 되는 셈이다. This album is the 6th regular classic collection of Stone Jazz who's been on the scene steadily ever since 2005 with the motto - 'Sincere interact between Jazz & tradition'. Starting with Korean folks (Crossover Korean Soul), they've ranged over most of public genres - Jazz standards (On Eastern Angle) and Carols (More Snow) in 2007, world pops (The Beyonders) in 2009, and Korean contemporaries (Bound up 緣) in 2011 followed by this album, the final one among this series. 이 작업은 몇 백 년 전 클래식을 만들었던 서양 사람들의 감성과 심미적 결과물을 소재로 국악과 재즈를 통해 우리의 감성과 정서 그리고 상상을 실어 ‘새로운 아름다움’을 만들어내는 것 이다. 가발, 모자, 장신구등 거추장스러운 의상과 건축양식등 에서 보이듯이 여기저기 빈틈없이 빼곡히 화려한 장식을 채워넣으며 물질과 함께 도도한 귀족의 고상함을 추구하며 행복해 하던 그들의 감성에 비해, 허한 공간을 바라보며 긴 숨을 내어 쉬며 보이지 않는 세계에 대한 경외와 상상의 나래를 펼치는 우리네의 정서를 국악과 재즈라는 예술의 형태에 순수하게 담아 본 것이다. This is the work of creating a 'new beauty' with our sensitivity, sentiment and imagination through the art form of jazz and korean traditional music, using as the material the esthetic result of western sensitivity who made the classics a few hundred years ago. In the form of art of Korean tradition and jazz has it purely contained our sentiment that spreads the wings of imagination about invisible world as looking at an empty space breathing out deeply compared to the western sentiment who felt happiness pursuing a nobleness with materials as an aristocrat filling in all the space in his life without any margin, as seen from such burdensome clothing as wigs, hats, and accessories and also from architectural decorations. 본 작업은 이전 것들과 마찬가지로 소위 비밥(Bebop)의 기교와 우리의 장단을 조합해가며 어떤 기술적 결과물을 만들어 내려고 애쓰진 않았다. 애초부터 혹자들이 말하는 ‘국악의 틀’이나 ‘재즈의 틀’ 어떤 것이 더 우세한 것인지 무게중심을 따지고 분석하는 것에는 별로 관심을 갖지 않았다. 음악을 사회문화적으로 해석해 어떤 정답의 형태로 만드는 것이 아니라 단지 듣는 이의 몸과 마음을 움직이면 된다는 고집과 함께 음악을 통해 희로애락을 느끼며 상상의 세계에 빠져 행복해 하는 실질적 효과를 근본적 목적으로 했기 때문이다. Just like previous works, this work has no effort to come up with a certain technical result combining so called Bebop technique with korean traditional musical tools. it has no interest in analyzation and quibbling over the superiority of jazz or tradition. Not making up a correct answer interpreting music socially and culturally, it took the practical effect as fundamental purpose that music ought only to move the body and mind of listeners to feel joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure and make them fall in the world of imagination to feel happy. 물론 함께하는 즉흥연주 부분에서는 재즈의 화성과 국악의 선율을 가지고 이론적으로 고민을 하기도 했지만 이는 사실 원천적으로 한정된 국악의 멜로디를 복잡한 재즈의 화성에 녹여 넣기 위한 불가피 했던 과정이었다. 그런 과정에서 원래 재즈의 악기들로만 연주했을 때 ‘복잡한 화성 + 복잡한 선율’의 형태의 그냥 평상시 듣던 재지(jazzy)한 사운드의 느낌이 본 작업 에서 국악기들과의 혼합에 의해 ‘복잡한 화성 + 단순한 선율’의 새로운 화성과 선율적 조합과 더불어 새로운 분위기와 울림의 사운드 포맷을 구현하며 묘한 행복감을 얻게 되어 이것이 하나의 독특한 어법으로 구축되기도 했다. Of course, although there has been theoretical agony with jazz harmony and traditional melody in mutual improvisation part, it is in fact inevitable process to melt the fundamentally limited melody capacity of traditional instruments into the complex jazz harmony pallet. In such a process, usual jazzy sound feeling when played by jazz instruments only in the form of 'complex harmony + complex melody' turned into a new resounding sound format with a new atmosphere of harmony and melody combination to get a exotic happiness when combined with korean traditional instruments with the form of ‘complex harmony + simple melody’. And this eventually may have build up such a musical method. 한편, 각 트랙의 제목은 대부분 그냥 원곡이나 그것의 닉네임 으로 널리 알려진 제목들로 간단하게 표기했지만, 몇 개의 트랙엔 부제가 붙어있다. CD1의 첫 곡인 Elise (The Temptress)는 실제로 베토벤에겐 고상하고 우아한 여인으로 여겨졌을 듯 하지만 편곡자에겐 음악과 함께 발랄하기에 그지없는 현대의 바람둥이 여성으로 재탄생 시키고 싶어서 붙인 부제이며, CD1 의 마지막 피아노 솔로곡인 Choral III 의 부제인 'Rain train'은 실로 원곡자인 베토벤의 의도와는 전혀 상관없이 편곡자가 데모 녹음후 모니터링을 하면서 스스로 이전에 러시아의 한 지역을 비오는 날 기차를 타고 여행하며 보았던 평범한 마을에 한 뚱뚱한 여인이 스카프를 머리에 두르고 급히 기차역을 벗어나던 모습과 풍경 그리고 기차의 차창에 부딪쳐 흘러내리는 빗방울의 분위기가 문득 떠올라 붙인 부제이며, CD2 의 첫 번째 트랙인 Humor(isk)는 브람스가 마찬가지로 고상하게 가졌음직한 Humor의 감각을 강렬한 비트와 인상을 가진 편곡과 함께 앙증맞은 연주 정서로 접근해 Humor의 ‘위험한’(risk) 수위를 언어적으로 덧붙이기도 했다. 그리고 CD2 의 세 번째 트랙인 Pavane 의 부제인 Volcano lake는 우연히 술자리에서의 화제 중 아쟁의 화산 폭발과 호수와 비유되는 연주 감성의 이야기가 떠올라 붙인 제목이지만 실제로 곡을 들으며 한밤중 잔잔한 호수에 슬픈 전설을 품은 거대한 화산이 투영되고 이를 한쪽에서 비춰주는 영겁의 달빛의 분위기를 떠올리기도 했다. 이도 또한 원작자 포레의 의도하곤 아무런 관계가 없다. 이렇듯 음악을 통해 개개인이 갖는 어떤 환상과 느낌, 분위기와 이야기 속의 내적 아름다움을 창출해 내는 것이 이론이나 형태나 장르 그리고 사회성 같은 것 보다 실제로 더욱 중요하다고 생각하며 진행해온 작업이다. Meanwhile, although the title of each track has mostly been simply put with the widely known title for the original, there are a few subtitles on some tracks. To the 1st tune of CD1- ‘Elise’, who may have been a lofty and elegant lady to Beethoven, the subtitle 'The Temptress' has been put to give a new birth to her as an extremely lively modern lady to the arranger with music. The last track of CD1- Piano solo, Choral III's subtitle 'Rain train' came from the memory of the arranger that while he was travelling in Russia on the train in a rainy day, he saw a fatty middle aged woman scarfed on her head hurriedly leaving the train station in a ordinary russian town through the train window with rain drops. When he was monitoring the demo recording of that tune, that scene just came to his mind. The 1st track of CD2, Humor(isk) has been titled with sense of linguistic humor when the arranger came up with musical idea of a strong beat and impression. And the 3rd track Pavane's subtitle 'Volcano lake' came oddly from the drinking table conversation about the sentiment of the Ajang (Korean traditional lap cello) player compared to a volcano eruption and sound lake. However, when the arranger listened to the recording, the scene really came to his mind where in the middle of the night a quiet lake is reflecting a volcano with a sad legend with a help of illumination of a full moon above. And that also has nothing to do with Faure's title. Like this way, this work has been done bearing in mind that producing an inner beauty with each individual in an atmosphere of certain feeling of fantasy through music is far more important than such things as theory, form, genre and sociality. 간추려 말하면 본 작업은 편곡자의 재즈와 클래식 음악적 소양과 감성, 그리고 상상력위에 국악과 재즈가 같이 자신들이 잘 할 수 있거나 해볼 만한 것들을 하며 자유롭게 놀며 이런 저런 아름다움을 발견하고 울고 웃을 수 있는 커다란 장을 마련했을 뿐이다. 이런 장을 바라보는 이들이 가끔 고개를 끄덕이고 어깨와 다리를 흔들며 눈을 지그시 감고 무엇인가를 상상하며 행복해하는 모습을 보는 것이, 기술적 사회적으로 그럴싸한 어떤 결과물을 만드는 것 보다 오히려 더 큰 결실 일 것이라는 생각이었다. 서구문물의 융성과 급속한 전파에 의해 서방세계가 지구촌의 경제와 문화를 석권하고 있는 현재 이미 서양의 클래식이 마치 인류 음악의 고전처럼 여겨지고, 우리나라엔 해방 후 홍수처럼 쏟아져 들어온 서양음악이 우리의 감성을 제대로 거치지 않고 비대한 소비 형태로 자리 잡은 오늘날, 예술적으로 그 누군가에 의해 당연이 이미 행해져야 했을 작업을 8년간 순수한 마음으로 꾸준히 이어온 이 프로젝트가 예술적으론 ‘어떤 모양새’로 연주하느냐 보단 ‘무엇을 어떻게, 무엇을 위해 ’ 연주할 것이냐 라는 원천적인 것을 더욱 생각해 보게 하고, 가능한 많은 이들로 하여금 잠시라도 우리주변의 음악을 다시 바라보고 우리 스스로의 음악적 감성을 재발견하며 새로운 아름다움을 느낄 수 있게 작은 도움이 된다면 아티스트들에겐 커다란 행복이 될 것이다. - 프로젝트 노트중 - In short, this work has just provided a roomy space with the arranger's musical culture in jazz and classic, sentiment and imagination where the traditional instruments and jazz together play freely, crying and laughing, doing what they can do well and trying what they can try to find this and that kind of beauty. And it was thought that it would be a bigger fruit to see some other people look at this space nodding their head, shaking their shoulder and legs and closing their eyes to imagine something and to feel happy than making up some technical and social result. In the present when the western civilization that has flourished and been spreaded so rapidly is sweeping over the globe, already western classic has been conceived as the classic of all human being’s music, and when in our country western music has been settled as a huge over-consuming culture without being digested through our sentiment ever since the end of world war II, it would be a great happiness to the artists if this project, which artistically should already have been done by someone else, but which has lately been led steadily by Stone Jazz for 8 years with sincerity can help as many people as possible artistically in brooding more over fundamentally what and how and why to play than how it looks to play, in reflecting music around ourselves again, in rediscovering ourselves' musical sensitivity and in feeling a new beauty. - From the Project note -
