지난 몇 년 동안 해외의 한글학교 교사들에게, 한국어만이 아니라 한국사 교육이 병행되어야 한다는 점을 강조해 왔습니다. 최근에는 해외 한국어 교육을 대표하는 기관과 한국사를 통해 한국어를 가르치는 교재의 필요성을 논하기도 했습니다. 그러던 중, 이 책이 출판된다는 이야기를 듣고 대단히 기쁜 마음이 들었습니다.
저는 오랫동안 대학에서 한국사를 강의했고, 한국의 중학교 역사와 고등학교 한국사 교과서를 대표 집필했습니다. 또 미국 대학에서 한국사 강의를 해 보았으며, 해외 한글학교 교사들을 상대한 현지 및 초청 연수에서 강의를 해 본 경험이 있습니다. 물론 대학의 한국학과에서 외국 학생들에게 한국사를 가르치기도 했습니다. 그런 다양한 경험을 바탕으로 보았을 때, 이 책은 몇 가지 특징을 가지고 있습니다. 우선 시간의 흐름에 따라 전술하기보다 정치·경제·사회·문화의 각 분야로 나누어 서술하고 있습니다. 따라서 각자가 관심이 있는 분야부터 찾아 읽거나 가르치면 된다는 장점이 있습니다. 더불어 역사상 사건과 개념에 대한 용어 정리가 잘 되어 있습니다. 사실 우리가 지금 쓰는 말들은 역사 속에서 만들어진 결과물입니다. 이 책에 나오는 어휘들을 통해 고급 단어 실력을 갖출 수 있고, 한국 문화와 역사에 대해 좀 더 잘 이해할 수 있을 것입니다. 부디 많은 분들이 이 책을 통해 한국의 전근대사도 배우고, 한국어 문장에 대한 이해력을 높이는 기회를 가지시길 바랍니다. For the past few years, when speaking to Korean instructors abroad, I’ve emphasized the need to teach Korean history while also teaching the Korean language. Recently, I’ve discussed the need for Korean language textbooks with representative institutions that teach Korean overseas. That’s why I was really excited when I heard this book was being published. I taught Korean history at universities for a long time and wrote Korean history textbooks for middle and high schools in Korea. Additionally, I’ve given lectures on Korean history at American universities, and also have experience lecturing Korean language school teachers during local and invitational training sessions. Of course, I also taught Korean history to foreign students from Sangmyung University’s Korean Studies Department. Based on my various experiences, from my point of view, this book has plenty of great features. First, it separates its ideas into various areas, such as politics, economy, culture, and women, rather than just describing them by the passage of time. This means that people can find, read, or teach the areas they are interested in. Further, the terms used in the historical cases and events are well-organized. The language we use today is the result of a long, rich history. Through this book, you can learn high level vocabulary, and come to understand Korean culture and history even better.
