프랑스의 지휘자, 작곡가.
실험적 현대음악 작곡과 연주, 연구 발전에 크게 공헌하였다. 현대음악과 음향을 연구하는 기구 IRCAM(국립 음악 음향 연구소, Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique)와 현대음악 연주 단체인 앵테르콩텅포랭 앙상블(Ensemble intercontemporain)을 창설하였다.
불레즈가 쓴 작품은 메시앙과 당시 음악계 경향에서 많은 영향을 받았다. 특히, 쇤베르크가 제시한 '음렬(Serie)'을 기초로 한 '음렬주의(Musique serielle)' 기법을 사용하였고, 피아노 소나타 3번부터는 우연성 음악에도 접근하였다.
지휘자로서는 자신의 작곡 활동에 영감을 불어넣는 작곡가들을 즐겨 연주했다. 드뷔시, 스트라빈스키, 제 2비엔나 학파인 쇤베르크, 알반 베르크, 리게티, 루치아노 베리오와 같은 작곡가들이 이에 속한다. 그 중에서도 2비엔나 학파의 안톤 베베른은 전작을 두 번이나 녹음하였다. 라벨, 바르톡, 바레즈, 말러, 브루크너의 작품 지휘가 특히 유명하다.
음악 외에도 현대 예술에 큰 관심을 가진 불레즈는 피나 바우쉬(Pina Bausch), 모리스 베자르(Maurice Bejart)와 같은 현대무용 안무가나 락 스타인 프랑크 자파(Frank Zappa)와 공동 작업을 하였다.
