아이린 템플 베일리(Irene Temple Bailey, 1869~1953)는 20세기 초 미국에서 가장 사랑받은 대중 소설가이자 단편 작가였다. 버지니아주 피터즈버그에서 태어나 워싱턴 D.C.에서 어린 시절을 보냈고, 리치먼드의 여학교에서 공부했다. 1900년대 초부터 《새터데이 이브닝 포스트》, 《코스모폴리탄》, 《굿 하우스키핑》, 《맥콜스》 등 여러 유명 잡지에 소설을 발표했으며, 단편에서 거둔 성공에 힘입어 1907년 첫 장편 『주디(Judy)』를 펴냈다. 이후 25권이 넘는 베스트셀러를 남기며 당대 가장 성공한 작가 중 한 사람이 되었다.

Irene Temple Bailey (1869?1953) was one of the most beloved popular novelists and short-story writers in early twentieth-century America. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, she spent her childhood in Washington, D.C., and attended a girls' school in Richmond. From the early 1900s she published fiction in leading national magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, and McCall's, and the success of her short stories led to her first novel, Judy, in 1907. She went on to write more than twenty-five best-selling books, becoming one of the most successful authors of her day.
Known as the "Queen of the Romantic Novel," Bailey wrote stories marked by innocent heroines, high drama, and happy endings, winning a devoted following among women and young readers. She never married, pouring her romantic sensibility entirely into her work instead. The titles collected here?among them Contrary Mary, The Tin Soldier, and The Trumpeter Swan?all reflect that warm, romantic world so characteristic of her writing.

『청춘의 영광』은 제목이 품은 밝음과 이야기가 머금은 그늘이 묘하게 어우러지는 소설이다. 어머니를 잃고 옛집을 떠나려는 소녀 베티나의 정신없는 짐 꾸리기로 문을 여는 이 작품은, 첫 장면부터 청춘이 마냥 눈부시지만은 않다는 사실을 나직이 일러 준다. 영광과 상실, 설렘과 외로움이 한자리에 놓여 있고, 그 사이에서 자기 자신을 찾아가려는 한 젊은이의 마음이 이야기의 온기를 만들어 낸다. 템플 베일리는 극적인 사건보다 감정의 결을 따라가는 데 능하다. 베티나와 의사 앤서니, 그리고 사연을 지닌 다이애나가 이루는 관계의 삼각 구도는 로맨스의 긴장을 주면서도, 결국은 '무엇에 마음을 두고 어떻게 홀로 설 것인가'라는 물음으로 되돌아온다. Glory and loss, longing and loneliness sit side by side, and it is a young woman's effort to find herself among them that gives the story its warmth. Temple Bailey is at her best tracing the texture of feeling rather than staging dramatic incident. The triangle formed by Bettina, the doctor Anthony, and the history-laden Diana supplies romantic tension, yet keeps circling back to a quieter question: where to place one's heart, and how to stand on one's own. The sentimentality and old-fashioned cadence of the self-styled "Queen of the Romantic Novel" may feel thick to a modern reader, and the ending is not hard to anticipate. Even so, in its tender portrait of youth struggling to live again in the wake of loss, the novel remains an easy, affecting read?an honest keepsake of its era's sensibility. |
