Lila was born the middle child of seven, on a farm in North Dakota. It was there that she developed her work ethic, her ability to fix anything with whatever was at hand and her sense of humor. It was also where she developed her wanderlust, her love of a good adventure. Lila was just coming into her own when she moved to Chicago to live with her sister and brother-in-law in 1935. She loved people, family, friends, dancing and men. Chicago was a rich environment for all she loved. Her natural tendencies to trust those who spoke the truth, who dared to try something new, and to work together to achieve goals pushed her to the top of the workforce in pre-war Cook County Hospital. A fiance pilot for American Airlines might have been her future, her fate, but the war came to the United States and all that changed.Crawling under barbed wire, donning gas masks, and marching in formation, Lila went through the first training class of the WAACS. Gone were the working clothes, the high heels, and the long walks along the Lake Michigan shorelines. She could change the oil, and spark plugs in Jeeps or tanks, and also sit for hours deciphering code from the enemies. She was disciplined and was very valuable to the Army.
