Then a storm breaks open the foundation of Ruth's church and exposes human remains wrapped in a choir robe. The bones belong to Reverend Isaiah Boone, a pastor who vanished in 1978. Ruth's will directs her grandchildren to a coded journal known as the Wolf Book, where one entry reads, "Seven wolves buried; one beneath the altar." The town begins whispering that its most revered woman may have been hiding a lifetime of murder behind hymns, births, and good works. Camille trusts law and procedure, even when the law once failed the women Ruth served. Darnell understands the intimacy of bodies, grief, and family secrets, but returning home reopens the scandal that drove him away as a teenager. Zora believes a camera can force the truth into daylight, until national attention threatens the privacy of the very survivors she wants to honor. Their investigation follows old hymn recordings, land deeds, missing photographs, coded midwifery notes, and the surviving women who remember why official justice was never offered to them. When a developer trying to seize the church property is murdered and evidence points toward Darnell, the siblings must solve both a cold case and a present-day killing before their grandmother's legacy becomes the weapon that destroys them. Rich with Mississippi atmosphere, family tension, buried history, church politics, and moral ambiguity, Saints Don't Stay Buried is a Black Southern Gothic mystery about the difference between reputation and truth, protection and concealment, faith and predatory authority.
