It concludes with the fall of Oechalia, Deianira's fatal mistake, the poisoned robe and the funeral pyre that carried Heracles from mortal agony to divine immortality. Drawing upon surviving Greek and Roman literary traditions, this book presents Heracles neither as a flawless champion nor as a simple criminal. It explores the full contradiction of a hero who protected communities and destroyed households, endured injustice and inflicted it, accepted punishment and returned repeatedly to violence. This is the story of Greece's greatest hero-and of the man who could overcome every monster except the danger within himself.
