(Abstract)
In Ramanujan's Starry Night, fifty-two poems weave together some of the most influential equations, numbers, and scientific laws in human history-from the Pythagorean theorem to Einstein's theory of gravity. Rather than explaining mathematics, these poems transform mathematical ideas into poetic imagination, revealing unexpected connections between science, nature, and the human spirit. As readers journey through the collection, they encounter the beauty of mathematics not as abstract formulas, but as living metaphors that illuminate our understanding of the universe. This collection invites readers into a new literary landscape where poetry and mathematics coexist, offering a distinctive example of science poetry and mathematical poetry in contemporary literature. In this collection, Ramanujan’s Starry Night, the fundamental equations of modern science-from the Pythagorean theorem to Einstein's gravitational field equations-are woven directly or indirectly into fifty-two poems. By reading from beginning to end, you will find yourself no longer a stranger to science or mathematics. Through these poems, you will encounter some of the most influential equations, numbers, and laws in human history, and discover how poetry and mathematics can come together to create something profoundly beautiful. (Excerpt) Part 1 - Mathematical Physics Shining Like Stars Einstein's Gravitational Equation 1 Speed keeps rising, mass grows ever larger. As human eyes grow brighter, cracks begin to show in Newton’s tale. Flying on a spaceship of inspiration, Einstein wanted to present outstanding sentences to the world. He locked himself in a vertically accelerating box. He measured time on a spinning disk. ‘Light bends as it touches the sun. The clock ticks slower around the edge than at the center, and the rim of the disk shrinks.’ His imagination leaped through time and space. 2 ‘The inside of a falling box becomes weightless. Spacetime is curved by gravity, and time slows down.’ This is the nuclear fuel of an epic. ---------------- A part of 〈Einstein's Gravitational Equation〉 --- 본문 중에서 |

This poetry collection speaks the language born of the meeting between a mathematician and a poet. The poet is the mathematician’s persona, and the mathematician is the poet’s other self. Through this book, he seeks to reveal how these two languages-spoken differently-live the same life. Thus, in his poems, we witness the beautiful blossoms that bloom where the two converge. The scattered equations across the pages resemble illustrations of the cosmos, offering visual delight along the journey.
Gi-Cheol Jeon (Poet & Critic) (전기철 교수, 시인, 평론가) Viewed through the lens of a passion for truth, mathematics is philosophy in its purest form. It is a solitary yet beautiful pursuit, driven by an idealist captivated by the desire to approach the order and principles of the universe-traversing between abstract thought and the tangible world. The poems in this collection capture moments of fundamental wonder and joy encountered by a dreamer on an irreversible journey. You-Joong Kim (Literary Critic and Professor) (서울대 교수, 평론가) This book explores traditional mathematical themes-such as Pythagoras, pi, and equations-through the refined poetic sensibility of a scientist and poet, woven into the current of history. The author’s vivid imagination shines as he unlocks the secrets of numbers from Ramanujan’s notebooks beneath a night sky filled with countless stars. It invites readers to perceive the profound and beautiful concepts of mathematics through the eyes of the heart. Gisang Cheon (Mathematician, Professor Emeritus) (성균관대 교수, 수학자) |
