The Lady from the Sea is one of the few rescues Ibsen ever wrote, and the rescue arrives neither through love nor through sacrifice but through the cancellation of a contract. Dr Wangel paid Ellida's father for her, and Ellida knows it. What has been making her ill is not the strange sailor but the fact that she was placed in a life she never once chose. The Stranger is the play's most contested figure ? a real man who nonetheless declines to be quite real. His name changes more than once, and the stage clouds with mist and water-light whenever he appears. This is where Ibsen begins leaving naturalism behind, and the point is not who he is but what he stands in for: the unchosen life, the sea not taken, an entire existence never decided upon. The terms of the ending are exact. The moment Wangel lets his wife go ? go, freely, on your own responsibility ? the compulsion loses its hold at once. That a relationship survives only at the cost of surrendering possession reads like Ibsen's answer, nine years on, to the door Nora closed behind her. Here, though, it is the man who opens it first. Which is why the woman stays. |
