The Feast at Solhoug was the only early play of Ibsen's to succeed in its own day. The Bergen audience of 1856 was delighted, and a twenty-eight-year-old unknown discovered for the first time that he could hold a stage. What makes it worth reading now, though, is not what works but what doesn't quite fit. The medieval ballad surface is frankly thin. Outlaws and the king's sheriff, a poisoned cup, a pardon that arrives an hour late ? the plot walks straight out of the old songs, and most of the characters never step outside their assigned parts. Margit is the exception. A woman who married for property and has spent every night since totting up the price, for whom her husband's continued existence is itself the sentence. Ibsen was twenty-seven when he drew her, and she marks the spot he would keep returning to for the next twenty-five years. Nora, Hedda, Mrs Alving ? all of them descend from her. The play's most honest moment is its ending. Margit does not get her love; she withdraws to a convent while Gudmund and Signe are joined. By ballad logic that is a happy resolution, yet the figure left burned on the retina is not the winning couple but the woman stepping aside. Ibsen did not yet have the tools to handle that imbalance. He could already see it. |
