Slavery was abolished in the District of Columbia, April 16th, 1862. After the emancipation proclamation of January 1st, 1863, thousands of freed slaves crowded into Washington, Alexandria and other places occupied by the Union army.
These men, women, and children, without means, were fed and sheltered. This multitude of dependent people, bewildered by their new surroundings, with no self-reliance, and without anyone to care for them, were cared for by the labors of Christian men and women.
And later, when the war had ended, four million homeless people; penniless, friendless, with no utensils, no lands, no churches, no schools, no business experience, were thrust forth into the heart of the nation. The situation was truly heartbreaking.
Every Christian and every patriot recognized the importance of providing for them schools with properly trained and qualified teachers, and also preachers to prepare them for their newfound freedom.
