The book opens in the last week of the school term, under a stretch of gray weather that seems to have settled permanently over the town. She confides in a fellow teacher, Mrs. Porter, and what comes out is not quite complaint: it is the recognition that her days have arranged themselves into a pattern she never chose and cannot easily break. Then word arrives that her younger brother has been left wretched by a friend's engagement, and the news forces Margaret to look squarely at the narrow set of futures her position permits her. Kathleen Thompson Norris was among the most widely read popular novelists in America during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in San Francisco in 1880, she grew up in comfortable circumstances until, at nineteen, she lost both parents within a matter of weeks and found herself responsible for her younger siblings. For several years afterward she took whatever work she could find ? bookkeeper, shop clerk, teacher, newspaper reporter ? and the experience of labor and near-poverty would later supply the ground beneath much of her fiction.
In 1909 she married the writer Charles Gilman Norris and moved to New York. Her first novel, Mother, appeared in 1911 and brought her immediate recognition from critics and general readers alike; before long she was one of the best-paid writers in the country. Over the next half-century she produced more than eighty novels along with a great many short stories.
Her books are, for the most part, about ordinary women: the young woman caught between work and love, the daughter trying to climb out of poverty, the wife enduring the disillusionments of marriage. She was faulted at times for sentimentality and for endings that came too easily, but her willingness to treat women's economic independence and the inequalities of domestic life as serious subjects won her a devoted readership, particularly among women. In her later years she returned to California and spoke publicly against war and capital punishment. She died in San Francisco in 1966.

The short novel that first made Norris's name looks like a tribute to motherhood, but it is really a daughter's book. Margaret Paget endures the final week of the school term amid bad weather and tired children, afraid that her life has already been decided for her. What she wants is not extravagant: a wider world, a few hours that belong to her. Norris neither mocks this longing nor inflates it. She simply sets it down as it is.
At the center of the book stands Margaret's mother, a woman worn thin by the raising of many children, and through her Norris asks what such a life uses up and what it leaves behind. The trouble is that the answer arrives with more certainty than a modern reader may want. A daughter who wanted a life of her own finds her meaning in her mother's path instead ? which reads, depending on the day, as consolation or as argument.
What keeps the book alive is the honesty of its opening pages. Norris understood, and rendered with unusual closeness, the state of a woman who is exhausted and has nowhere to say so.
