The title is exact. The real event of this novel is not the engagement but the fracture it opens between the women who remain in the house. Cherry Strickland comes running home in love, and each member of the family takes the news differently. Norris handles the scene entirely in dialogue, explaining nothing. No one tells Cherry she may be wrong about Martin Lloyd, yet everything is already contained in her sister Alix's careful silence. That small difference in temperature holds up the whole book. What Norris does well is admit that affection and envy between sisters grow from the same root. Alix loves Cherry sincerely and wants what Cherry has, and the novel declines to scold her for it. The later chapters move faster than they should, and Martin Lloyd never quite becomes a person in his own right ? he functions mainly as the pressure applied to test the two women. Even so, the book stays with you, because it says something rarely said: when marriage takes one sister away, something ends for the one left behind as well. |
