TESTIFY is a memoir-in-essays collection shaped by that method. The essays move between childhood and adulthood, humor and grief, city neighborhoods and rural family places. The reflective narrator understands more than the child or younger man inside the scene, but I try not to let reflection erase uncertainty. Memory is not a camera. It may preserve a voice more clearly than a date, or return a feeling before it returns the exact words. My responsibility is to be honest about that limitation while remaining faithful to what the experience meant and how it continued to shape me.
The author is not interested in presenting a perfected narrator. Fear, embarrassment, selfishness, misjudgment, and regret belong in these pages because they are part of the testimony. In 'A Cheering Section,' a boy experiences his mother's public encouragement as humiliation before the adult narrator recognizes it as an enduring gift. In 'Waiting to Die,' necessary caregiving decisions do not cancel guilt; love and uncertainty remain in the room together.
Faith is also part of the work's essential frame. I write as a Christian because that is how I have experienced the world, but I do not use faith to remove difficulty or force each memory into an easy answer. In these essays, faith appears through gratitude, prayer, service, grace, and the willingness to act without certainty. It is one way the narrator interprets experience, not a substitute for fully rendering the experience itself.
