The title promises Julia Page's story, but the novel begins with her mother ? and that decision defines the book. To understand what Julia becomes, we must first understand what Emeline was. Emeline Page is among the least comfortable figures Norris created. She is poor, worn down, and both loves her daughter and expects something back from her. Norris shows, without moralizing, how much violence there can be in transplanting an unfulfilled hope into a child. The steadiness of that portrayal ? refusing to make the mother either a saint or a monster ? is the novel's chief virtue. As Julia grows, the story becomes hers, and turns into a long examination of what she has inherited and what she may set down. Several incidents in the middle sections are pitched too high, and the forgiveness offered at the close is softer than the earlier chapters had earned. Even so, the book lasts, because it holds two generations of women side by side and presses a hard question all the way through: what is a daughter to do with a deprivation handed down to her? |
