Every building keeps secrets. This one has decided to talk.
Manhattan, 2072. The floods have taken the streets, and the river the Lenape called Mahicantuck flows where the parkway used to run. Nearly everything along the waterfront has fallen. Riverside Towers remains.
For over a century, the twin-towered Washington Heights co-op has been listening. It heard Black veterans and pressed Sunday dresses fill its hallways in 1962. It heard an ad man play his cards close and correct, two Southern matriarchs wage a cold war across a laundry room, and a young couple fall in love in a Harlem record-shop listening booth. It heard Bingo nights and blackouts, salons and psalms, a marriage that cracked the morning the towers fell downtown - and it has never told a soul what became of the woman who vanished from the building without a trace.
Then two travelers arrive by canoe: B-Side, whose family's story began in Apartment 11V the day the doors first opened, and Leni, who dreams of a woman on the roof. And the building must finally decide what to keep - and what to give up.
Told in the voices of the building itself, a small church with immaculate taste, the river herself, and the ghost of John James Audubon, We Remain is a polyphonic elegy of Black Harlem and Washington Heights - part family saga, part ghost story, part flood-tide prophecy - about what we bury, what we keep, and who remains. Includes an author's note on the real Washington Heights cooperative whose extraordinary residents furnished the novel's walls.
