The Sh?b?genz?, written by the Japanese Zen priest D?gen (1200-53), is a collection of discourses on Buddhist teachings and meditation practice. The content is difficult yet profound and strangely beautiful even in translation. But almost eight hundred years after D?gen's death, and across seemingly insuperable barriers of culture and language, does he speak to us today? These personal readings, which interpret D?gen's texts as discourses on the nature of reality, suggest that he does - and that he speaks both to Buddhists and non-Buddhists, including those of us who seek a wholly secular understanding of the world. We cannot hope to grasp reality by 'taking ourselves to things', D?gen says, for that is what gives rise to our confusions and illusions. We must 'let things come to us', just as they are, in the immediacy of the here and now.
?????The readings are selected from three of the key discourses, Bussh? ('Buddha-nature'), Genj?k?an ('Manifesting suchness') and Uji ('Being-time'), that D?gen composed in the decade 1233-43. Each is accompanied by his original text, a line-by-line translation, and extensive notes and references.
