Every storm has a prelude of poems inherent in its clouds, and the author, Marie Sifford, attempts to discover these poems as she travels through forty years of adult life. These poems were written after the author graduated from UNC-CH in 1987, where she was a member of a coeducational literary fraternity, St. Anthony Hall (Delta Psi Fraternity).
The author also received an MA from UNC-G in 1993 in biology. Her love of science and nature are prevalent themes in these poems. During a storm, the thunderclaps are frightening and occasionally one gets caught in a downpour, but the author learned to cope using the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and trusting her Higher Power. Many of the poems depict the concepts in AA, such as willingness, gratitude, surrender, etc.
The author is a Presbyterian and believes Jesus Christ should be the foundation for her life. Although many of her poems do encompass her Christianity, she hopes her poems have a message for everyone and the spiritual nature is conveyed. The author believes that everyone is bestowed a spiritual gift to edify one another. Many facets of her bipolar disorder are illuminated in these poems, and she had to cope with severe depression at times which was nearly debilitating. The healing powers of positive thinking are immense, however, and these poems are meant to be inspirational and writing them aided the author in her recovery.
