Rudy Vallee was the first pop star ever. He came to prominence in 1928 and would rule the air through the 1930s. His star faded in favor of folks like Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra, but they wouldn't exist without Vallee.
This book is the true story behind Rudy's second marriage and the scheme he and his lawyer concocted to ruin Rudy's wife, Fay. While Rudy did an excellent job of covering his tracks, he didn't account for his chauffeur, Ralph de la Osa Sr, compiling his own archive of evidence. The core of this book is the manuscript written by Ralph, but it has been annotated with additional information thanks to the research of his great-granddaughter, Silvana. She found his manuscript and wanted to know what was true.
What Silvana learned and shares throughout the footnotes, Introduction, and Afterword in this book is that Rudy had a network of support that existed throughout the entertainment industry, the law enforcement and political offices of New York City, and the press. Rudy and his lawyer, Hyman Bushel, were immensely powerful individuals in a way that would not be seen again, but would still set a precedent for deference toward entertainers that we still see today.
Silvana uncovers many things in the course of her research including evidence of sexual violence, schemes, mob connections, and hints at more scandalous operations run by Rudy and his lawyer. Silvana speculates that the reason the book is never published may have been due to her own great-grandfather's culpability in these crimes. She does her best to read between the lines and share what evidence she has acquired through extensive research at archives across the United States.
With documents never revealed previously, this book exposes the truth behind the famous crooner and the birth of the modern entertainment industry.
