Cultural conflicts are widespread in today's increasingly interconnected world, particularly between China and the West. Intellectual divergence often precedes cultural divergence, and both trace back to underlying causes that have long drawn scholarly interest. Unlike many other investigations into these root causes, this book offers an exploratory, unconventional, and multidisciplinary perspective by examining writing systems. A writing system is a human invention, governed by traceable principles and deeply woven into everyday life; since antiquity, the methodologies embedded within it have extended beyond writing itself to exert a profound and enduring influence on language, cognition, and worldview.
Rooted in a character-based writing system, Chinese methodologies are marked by top-down expedient practice, conventional wisdom, and human-centric idealistic considerations of the external world. Rooted in true alphabets, Western methodologies are distinguished by bottom-up theoretical structure, logical and empirical rationality, and naturalistic realist considerations. More importantly, people internalize these methodologies through elementary education and the daily use of their traditional scripts, developing them as primary habits that may be as resilient as a native language. Because these methodologies are internalized this deeply, they are likely to continue shaping many aspects of life for as long as those writing systems remain in use.
The same analyses and conclusions can be extended, in comparable form, to other non-Western cultures as well. Modern Chinese methodologies and systems of knowledge combine traditional foundations with selectively imported elements, a pattern also common across non-Western societies. Despite this deep-rooted divergence between Chinese and Western civilizations, the recent success of the Chinese Model has demonstrated that material modernization can be achieved through the selective adoption of Western science, technology, and institutions without substantially altering indigenous cultural cores.
This book invites readers worldwide to explore how East-West conventional methodologies - rooted in writing systems, primarily Chinese characters and true alphabets - developed and diverged. It offers distinctive insights into methodological, philosophical, and cultural divergence not only between China and the West, but also, to varying degrees, between the West and other non-Western societies.
