The author also served as an executive responsible for management support at a foreign-owned manufacturing company and gained experience in founding and running a business. This professional background provided broad insight into the importance of organizational management, human resource development, workplace communication, education, and career development.

The author believes that understanding Korean history and culture involves examining the actions and choices of people in the past within the circumstances of their own time. In this book, the author explores accounts of the founding of kingdoms and warfare in the Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa alongside records of family life, songs, faith, and everyday life, seeking a closer understanding of the lives of people in ancient Korea and the societies in which they lived.

The author values an approach to reading that considers the nature of historical records and traditions and distinguishes historically substantiated facts from later interpretations. The hope is that this book will make ancient Korean history more approachable for non-Korean learners of Korean and adult readers in Korea, including younger generations, while helping readers understand Korean culture and exchange their perspectives in both Korean and English.

300 Stories That Offer a Fresh Reading of Ancient Korea through Two Historical Works

The defining strength of Ancient Korea through the Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa: 300 Stories lies in its approach to historical sources. Written for adult readers, it revisits ancient records while examining the distinctions between historical evidence and transmitted traditions.

Rather than concentrating exclusively on dynastic changes and military victories, the book explores a wide range of subjects, from struggles for royal power to family care, and from the introduction of Buddhism to poetry and art. This scope encourages readers to understand ancient Korean society not merely as a sequence of political events but through the experiences of people living under different conditions.

Its comparative treatment of the Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa is equally noteworthy. Where the two works describe the same person or event differently, the book preserves those differences. It avoids presenting myths and legends as established historical facts while exploring their cultural significance.

The paragraph-by-paragraph Korean?English presentation is another important feature. Korean language learners can acquire historical and cultural vocabulary in context, while Korean readers can develop their ability to understand and explain familiar historical stories in English.

For those new to ancient Korean history, the book serves as a broad introduction. For readers already familiar with its stories, it offers an opportunity to revisit the sources, compare accounts, and ask new questions.
