본 교재는 저자가 의대에서 10여 년간 의학 영어를 강의하면서 일본과 중국 등의 국가를 중심으로 하여 ESL의 한 지류가 되는 EMP(English For Medical Purposes) 학회를 참석 하고 또 연구하는 동안 국내에서도 의학 영어 교재의 필요성을 지속적으로 절감하게 되던 중, 그 첫 번째 시도로서 2006년에 EMP Series 1편으로 의학의 이슈를 인문학적 관점에서 다룬 ‘영미문학의 창으로 보는 의학’을 출판하였으며, 이번에는 좀 더 실용적인 관점에서 사용할 수 있는 본 교재 ‘실용 병원 영어’를 준비하였다.
본 교재의 구성과 특징은 여러 가지 이유로 인하여 진찰의 필요성을 느끼는 한 환자를 중심으로 환자가 병원 진찰을 예약하는 것으로 시작하여, 병원에 도착하여 필요한 장소의 지리를 묻고 접수하는 것, 진찰 받는 것 및 응급실, 방사선실, 물리치료실 등에서 여러 가지 처치와 검사를 받은 뒤 마지막으로 약국에서 약을 조제 받을 때까지 필요한 회화를 망라 하고 있다는 점입니다. 여러 분야와 관련된 회화를 다루고 있는 각 유닛의 후반에는 회화에 대한 연습 문제 뿐 아니라 주제에 맞게 기본적인 정보를 제공하는 독해 지문과 설명이 포함되고 있습니다. 마지막 Section에서는 병원에서 유익하게 사용할 수 있는 신체 부위에 따른 여러 증상을 영어로 나타낼 수 있는 다양한 표현들을 다루고 있습니다. 또한 부록에서는 꼭 알아야 하는 중요한 의학 용어 및 보건 관련 전공자들의 이력서, 추천서 쓰는 법등 의학 및 보건 관련 전공자들이 졸업 이후 현장에서 여러모로 실제적으로 필요한 유익한 정보를 다루고 있습니다. 본 교재는 위와 같은 방식으로 병원 전번에서 사용할 수 있는 실용 영어를 다루고 있기 때문에 그 대상은 의료와 관련된 모든 전공 학과, 예를 들어 의과 대학, 간호 대학 뿐 아니라 보건 대학 전 학과 학생들이 공부할 수 있도록 구성되어 있으므로 아무쪼록 유용하게 활용되기를 바랍니다. |
