저자 소개

토머스 하디 (Thomas Hardy)
1840~1928. 영국의 소설가, 시인. 잉글랜드 남부 도셋(Dorset)주(州) 하이어 보캠스턴(Higher Bockhampton) 출생.
1856년 도체스터 건축기사의 제자가 되었고, 1862년 런던의 건축사무소에 들어갔다. 건축공부를 하는 여가에 소설을 쓴 것이 당시 문단의 대가 G.메레디스에게 인정받았고, 그의 권고로 장편소설 <최후의 수단>(1871)을 출간하였다. 그는19세기 말 영국 사회의 인습, 편협한 종교인의 태도를 공격하고, 남녀간의 사랑을 성적(性的)인 면에서 대담하게 묘사하였기 때문에 당시의 도덕가들로부터 맹렬한 비난을 받았다. 그의 작품들은 대부분 영국 남부의 웨섹스(Wessex) 지역을 배경으로 하는데 이는 그의 고향을 모델로 한 것이다. 주요 저서에 웨섹스 소설이라 일컬어지는 <광란의 무리를 떠나서 Far from the Madding Crowd>(1874) <귀향 The Return of the Native>(1878) <캐스터브리지의 시장 The Mayor of Casterbridge>(1886) <숲의 사람들 The Woodlanders>(1887) <더버빌가의 테스 Tess of the D’Urbervilles>(1891) <무명의 주드 Jude the Obscure>(1895) 등이 있고, 장편 극시 ＜제왕들 The Dynasts＞(3부작, 1903∼1908) 외에 많은 웨섹스 시편들이 있다.
