1685년 2월 23일 ~ 1759년 4월 14일)은 독일에서 태어나 영국에서 활동한 바로크 시대의 작곡가이다. 헨델은 46곡의 오페라와 우수한 오라토리오를 비롯하여 오케스트라, 바이올린, 쳄발로, 오르간 분야에 이르기까지 많은 작품을 남겼다. 그의 음악은 명쾌하고 호탕하며 신선하여 생생한 리듬에 성악적이라고 평가된다. 독실한 개신교(루터교) 신자인 헨델의 대표적인 교회음악은 《메시아(Messiah)》로서 당시 영어 번역 성경인 킹 제임스 성경의 구절에 곡을 붙인 오라토리오이다.

헨델은 프로이센의 할레(현재는 독일 영토)에서 태어났다. 함부르크, 피렌체 등지에서 활동하다 1712년 이후 런던에 정착하였다. 앤 여왕의 비호를 받아 오페라 작곡가로 이름을 떨치게 되었다. 1726년에는 영국에 귀화하여, 죽을 때까지 영국에 살면서 오페라 46작품과 오라토리오 23작품, 많은 양의 교회음악은 물론 많은 기악음악 작품을 남겼다.

그러나 헨델의 일생이 그리 평탄한 것은 아니었다. 이탈리아 악파인 조반니 보논치니(1670년-1747년)와는 음악상의 적수였다. 이들의 경쟁과 헨델을 질투하는 음모 때문에 수차례의 파산과 세 번이나 죽을 고비를 당했지만 헨델은 그를 원망하지않고 오히려 보논치니의 질투를 은근히 즐겼다고 한다.

1708년 피렌체와 베네치아로 수업하러 갔다가 이탈리아의 도메니코 스카를라티와 만나 오르간과 하프시코드 경기를 하여 그 뒤부터 그와 친교를 맺었다

헨델은 그 후 영국으로 건너가 1732년까지 오라토리오를 작곡하기 시작하였다. 아일랜드 더블린에서 필생의 대작인 《메시아》를 24일이란 단기간에 탈고하였고 1742년 4월 12일 더블린에서 초연하여 절찬을 받았다. 《메시아》 초연후 8년째인 그가 65세 되던 해에는 완전한 승리자가 되었다. 그의 생존 중 《메시아》 공연만 해도 34회나 되었다고 한다. 1732년의 《에스테르》 개정판에 이어 1735년 사순절(四旬節)[3]에는 성가작품을 포함한 약 15편의 오라토리오를 헤이마케트 극장에서 연속 연주하여 점차 오라토리오 작곡가로서의 명성을 높였다. 또 1736년에는 《메시아》에 버금가는 유명한 오라토리오 《알렉산더의 향연(Alexander's Feast)》을 작곡하고 1738년∼1751년까지도 거의 모두를 오라토리오의 작곡에 경주하였다.

헨델은 가난한 음악가 구제회에 1000 파운드를 남겨 놓고 세상을 떠났다. 영국의 국가적인 음악가로서 존경을 받아 사후 웨스트민스터 사원에 묻혔다.

헨델은 그 명성을 거의 그의 극적 작품에서 얻었지만 통주저음을 바탕으로 성립되는 바로크적 협주양식에 기초를 두고 유려한 벨칸토의 성악적 멜로디와 결부하여 항상 간결·명쾌하며 밝은 표현을 나타냈다. 그의 멜로디에서 벨칸토 양식은 독일의 내면적인 힘찬 표현과 결부되어 호모포니의 방향으로 향한다. 또한 바로크 특유의 일정한 악형(樂型)의 반복이 사라반드, 쿠랑트, 가보트 등의 리듬에 지탱되면서 단조롭게 고수(固守)되고 있는 경우가 많으며, 바흐에서 볼 수 있는 표현의 길이라든가 다양성은 없으나 그 대신 알기 쉽고 명쾌한 표정을 보여준다. 그는 합창에서도 뛰어난 솜씨를 발휘했다.
