When Chhaya became big enough to hold a broom,
strangers came to the mountains where she lived.
They carried long panels and yellow stones to the mountaintop.
They worked for days, maybe weeks, or even months until they finished building a huge yellow house with many rooms.

Chhaya asked her mom who would live in the house.
Her mom said it wasn’t a house and no one lived there.
“It’s a school”, she said, “It’s for learning”.
“What do you learn?” Chhaya asked.
But her mom said she didn’t know.
Chhaya was curious so she asked one of the strangers who built the school.
“You learn how to count the lentil beans and to write your name,” he said.

She wanted to see what her name looked like.
She wanted to go to school.
The man told Chhaya to come back. So she went home and told her mom.
But mom said Chhaya couldn’t go.
“Why?” Chhaya asked.
“Because you are a girl,” her mom replied, “only the boys could go to school”.
Chhaya and her sisters had to stay home and work.

Chhaya’s job was to cook. She cooked twice a day.
Chhaya woke up before everyone else, boiled rice and water together, and then sat in front of the stove to watch the fire.
The sweet smell of rice sneaked out the cracks.
She could hear her tummy growl, but she had to wait for
her brothers.
She then stirred the beans. Leaning on a stick almost as tall as she, Chhaya watched a swarm of lentil beans swim in circles.
She tried to count them as they twirled.
But there were too many beans for her fingers. She wished she had known how to count how many more.

The next day, she woke up before the rooster crowed.
The food was made before anyone else woke up.
Hushed and on her tiptoes, Chhaya left the house and walked up the mountain to the huge yellow house.
She hid in the bushes and waited. She heard footsteps and giggles.
Soon, the school was full of kids.

Chhaya hid behind the back wall and found a small window. it was too high for her, so she stood on a rock.
There were no girls in the room.
Girls in the mountains stayed home. They had to cook and clean and sew. And before long, they would have to take care of babies.

Through the tiny corner of that window, Chhaya watched and learned.
The teacher wrote on a dark green board with a small white stick.
So she found a small stone and wrote on the wall. She copied the figures from the board, and soon realized that they were letters.
When it was time to make dinner, she crept through the bushes and scurried down the mountain.
Next day, she woke up a little earlier.
This time, she also put a small potato in the stove and took it with her to the school.
Day after day, she walked alone in the blue black cold.
When the letters and numbers covered the wall around her window, Chhaya moved to the next one.
