Cleland was born in London, the son of a lawyer. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and St Paul's School, and then studied law at Middle Temple. Cleland's first major work was the play The Woman of Pleasure, published in 1748. The play was a success, followed by the 1749 novel Fanny Hill. sexual awakening in young women.
