심영희 Young-Hee Shim
서울대 영문과를 졸업하고 서울대 대학원 사회학과에서 석사학위를 받은 뒤 미국 서던일리노이대학에서 비판범죄론으로 박사학위를 받았다. 독일 빌레펠트대학과 영국 옥스퍼드대학에서 박사후연구(1981~1982)를 했고, 뉴욕 컬럼비아대학(1991~1992)과 중국 베이징대학(2002~2003, 2010)에서 안식년을 가졌다. 1983년 이후 한양대에서 가르치면서 한국형사정책연구원(1989~1991)에 파견되어 성폭력, 성희롱에 대한 연구조사를 국내 최초로 실시했다. 이는 1990년대 성평등 운동, 가정폭력, 성폭력 추방 등 입법활동과 함께 여성운동의 토대가 되었다. 이런 배경에서 한국여성학회장, 평화를 만드는 여성회 공동대표, 민주평통 여성위원장, GPPAC 동북아지역 코디네이터 등을 역임했고 현재 한양대 명예교수이자 공익법인 (재)중민재단 상임이사로 있다.
Young-Hee Shim graduated from Seoul National University and got her Ph.D in sociology from Southern Illinois University. She had her post-Doctoral Research in Bielefeld University in Germany and Oxford University in the United Kingdom (1981~1982), and her Sabbatical at Columbia University in New York (1991~1992), and at Peking University in Beijing (2002~2003, 2010). She conducted many survey researches on sexual violence, domestic violence, adultery and sexual morality, and abortion, among others, while working at Korean Institute of Criminology (1989~1991). Then, while teaching at Hanyang University, she was dispatched to the Korean Institute of Criminology in 1989 to conduct a nation-wide victimization survey on sexual violence and sexual harassment, a first for Korea. This, along with her researches on issues such as gender equality and the elimination of domestic violence and sexual violence, helped establish the foundation for a national women’s legislative movement in the 1990s. Against this background, she has since served as the president of the Korean Association of Women’s Studies, as a co-representative of the organization Women Making Peace, as chair of the Women’s Committee for the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, and as a coordinator of Northeast Asia Region of GPPAC. She is currently an emeritus professor at Hanyang University and an executive director of the Joongmin Foundation, a public interest corporation.
