학생들이 간혹 교사의 성별(gender)에 관계없이 항상 ‘Yes, sir.’이라고 답하는 경우가 있는데, 성별에 따라 sir와 ma’am을 잘 선별하여 사용해야 한다는 것을 알려줄 필요가 있습니다. Mr.외에도 Miss, Mrs., Ms. 등의 호칭을 교사의 성(last name)에 붙여 사용할 수 있습니다. 위의 인사말들을 그대로 반복하여 상대방에게 다시 말하면 상대방을 향한 적절한 인사말이 됩니다. 첫 인사를 할 때는 상대방의 나이나 결혼 여부, 월급 등 매우 개인적인 내용을 묻지 않도록 주의해야 합니다. 그리고 한국 사람들의 일상적인 인사인 ‘식사하셨어요?’, ‘어디 가세요?’ 등의 질문은 특별한 목적을 가지고 묻는 경우를 제외하고는 묻지 않는 것이 일반적입니다. 여기에서 특별한 경우란 예를 들면 상대방과 함께 식사하러 가고자 하는 경우에 ‘Did you have lunch?’라고 상대방에게 묻는 경우입니다. 이 때 상대방이 허락한다면 함께 식사하러 갈 수도 있을 것입니다.
