몇 년 전 ‘마블 코믹스’인 〈타이거 디비전〉이 세상에 알려지면서, 나는 드디어 한국 히어로가 등장했다고 열을 올렸었다. 그런 내게 소설 〈해태〉는 또 다른 의미로 다가왔다. 한국문화캐릭터, 엄밀히 말하자면 동아시아 문화캐릭터가 등장하는 이야기가 한국을 배경으로 펼쳐진다는 것은 어쩌면 익숙하게 느껴질 수도 있다. 하지만 〈해태〉는 새롭게 느껴졌다. 게다가 서양 신화와 동양 신화의 충돌이라니 시작부터 흥미진진하다. ‘해태’는 항상 우리 곁에 있어 늘 보게 될 수밖에 없다, 그런데 보지 못한 것 같다. 정작 우리는 왜 이런 문화적 가치와 재미를 느끼지 못하고 늘 지나쳤을까. 역시나 가까이에 있으면 소중한 줄 모르는 법인가 보다. 작품을 읽어 내려가다 보면 판타지인 줄 알면서도 설득을 당하게 된다. 작가는 연민을 자아내는 주인공의 상황이 복잡하게 꼬여만 있도록 결코 내버려 두지 않는다. 그 솜씨와 방식을 보면 작가의 필력에 감탄하게 되고, 작품의 방대한 세계관을 짐작할 수 있다. 이제는 또 다른 느낌의 동아시아 캐릭터와 콘텐츠로 세계 엔터테인먼트 무대에서 〈해태〉의 화력과 흡입력을 시험해 볼 때다.
A few years ago, when the Marvel comic "Tiger Division" was introduced to the world, I was thrilled that a Korean hero had finally emerged. To me, the novel "Hae-tae" carried a different significance. While a story featuring Korean cultural characters, or more precisely East Asian cultural characters, set in Korea might feel somewhat familiar, "Hae-tae" felt refreshingly new. Moreover, the clash between Western and Eastern mythology from the outset was thrilling. "Hae-tae" is always around us, something we're bound to encounter, yet it feels like we haven't really seen it. Why haven't we appreciated its cultural value and entertainment until now? It's as if we've overlooked something precious right under our noses. As you continue reading the work, despite knowing it's fantasy, it begins to feel like the real world. The writer skillfully weaves a complex web around the protagonist, never letting the sympathy-inducing situations become stagnant. Witnessing the writer's prowess and approach, one can sense the vastness of the world within the story. Now is the time to put "Hae-tae" to the test on the global entertainment stage as another sensation of East Asian characters and content, to see its firepower and allure.
