《한국 전근대사로 배우는 한국어》에 이어 《역사 인물로 배우는 한국어》가 출판된다는 소식을 듣고 너무 반가웠습니다. 그동안 ‘한국어’ 교육의 중요성 못지않게 ‘한국사’ 교육도 필요하다고 주장해 왔고, 역사 공부는 시대사의 흐름으로 배우는 것과 함께 그 시대를 살았던 인물들을 통해 이해할 때 더 흥미로울 수 있기 때문입니다.
이 책에서는 한국의 역사에서 중요한 역할을 했던 인물들을 테마별로 두 사람씩 짝지어 설명하고 있습니다. 그리고 ‘생각 열기-핵심어 탐색-인물 이야기-유용한 표현-마무리 활동’으로 짜임새 있게 구성되어 있습니다. 따라서 이 책은 한국어를 잘 가르치기 위한 교재로서 역사를 적절하게 잘 활용하고 있다는 점에서 커다란 의의를 가집니다.
사실 우리가 지금 쓰는 말들은 모두 역사 속에서 만들어진 결과물입니다. 따라서 이 책에 나오는 어휘들을 통해 단어 실력과 문장력을 향상시킬 수 있고, 그 과정에서 한국 역사에 대하여 좀 더 재미있게 이해할 수 있을 것입니다. 부디 많은 분들이 이 책을 통해 한국의 역사 인물도 배우고, 한국어 어휘와 문장에 대한 이해력을 높이기를 바랍니다. 나아가 한국 문화의 이해와 함께 폭넓은 시선으로 세상을 바라볼 수 있기를 바랍니다.

I was thrilled to hear that THE FAMOUS PEOPLE IN KOREAN HISTORY is being published as a follow-up to THE PRE-MODERN HISTORY OF KOREA. I have long supported learning Korean history alongside the language. And studying history can be more engaging when taught through the stories of important figures within major historical contexts.
This book presents Korean historical figures in pairs for each of the six themes and offers activities in the sequence of “Before You Read,” “Keyword Study,” and “People in History.” By doing so, it carefully blends history with Korean language learning, making it an effective educational tool.
The words we use today all have historical origins. The vocabulary introduced in this book will help you improve your choice of words and sentence structure while also learning fun facts about Korean history. Our hope is that through this book, you will learn about Korean historical figures and expand your range of Korean vocabulary and sentences. Lastly, we wish that you will further cultivate a broader perspective of the world along with the Korean culture.
