연세대학교 정치외교학과 교수. 서양정치사상, 특히 자유주의, 민주주의 및 입헌주의 이론에 천착하고 있다. 연세대학교 정치학사, 시카고대학교 정치학 박사. 박사학위 논문으로 American Political Science Association이 수여하는 정치철학 부문 최우수 학술상 Leo Strauss Award를 받았다. 하버드대학교 정치학과 및 게이오대학교 법학부 석좌초빙교수 등을 역임했다. 주요 저서로 Max Weber’s Politics of Civil Society(Cambridge University Press, 2007), Making We the People(Cambridge University Press, 2015) 등이 있다.
