애틀란타에서 태어나 휘튼대학교(B.A.)와 예일대학교(M.Phil., Ph.D.)에서 철학을 공부하였다. 휘튼대학교, 세인트올라프대학교, 칼빈대학교에서 철학을 가르쳤으며, 현재 베일러대학교에서 철학 및 인문학 석좌교수로 재직하고 있다. 주요 연구 분야는 키에르케고어, 종교 철학, 메타 윤리학이다.
