덴마크 오르후스대학교의 평생학습과 명예교수(professor emeritus)이자 Simonsen & Illeris 교육 컨설팅의 설립자이다. 그는 학습이론과 성인교육에 혁신적인 공헌을 한 인물로 국제적으로 인정받고 있다. 뉴욕 컬럼비아대학교의 명예교수(honorary professor)이며, 국제 성인교육 명예의 전당 회원이다. 그는 『청소년의 학습과 동기 이해(Understanding Learning and Motivation in Youth)』(2018), 『우리는 어떻게 배우는가(How We Learn, 2판)』(2017), 『학습, 발달 및 교육(Learning, Development and Education)』(2016), 『변혁적 학습과 정체성(Transformative Learning and Identity)』(2014), 『직장학습의 기초(The Fundamentals of Workplace Learning)』(2011) 등 다수의 책을 저술했다.
