서울대학교 외교학과 및 동 대학원을 졸업하고 미국 캘리포니아 대학(University of California, Los Angeles)에서 정치학 박사학위를 받았다. 미국 테네시 대학교(University of Tennessee, Knoxville) 정치학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 서유럽에서의 국제이주 및 경제적 불평등 등의 정치경제 사안들과 유권자들의 정치적 행동 사이의 상호 관계를 연구하고 있다. 저서로 『Rationality of Irrationality: Political Determinants and Effects of Party Position Blurring』(단독, 미시간 대학교 출판부)와 『Social Identity and Working Class Support for the Populist Radical Right: From Economic and Political Distress to Cultural Grievances』(공저, 옥스퍼드 대학교 출판부)가 있다.
