육군사관학교 출신으로 한국중공업(현 두산중공업) 사장, 한국전력공사 사장, 한덕생명(주) 회장, 대한육상경기연맹 회장, 국제육상연맹(IAAF) 집행이사, 2011년 대구세계육상선수권대회 명예조직위원장 등을 역임하였다. 저서로 30여 만부가 판매된 『어느 할아버지의 평범한 이야기』(1989)를 비롯, 『어느 할아버지의 평범한 정치론』(1993), 『어느 할아버지의 평범한 문명이야기』(1995), 『지도자』(1996), 『남북전쟁』(2002), 『육상경기, 그 영웅들의 이야기』(2010), 『에너토피아』 (2014), 『Wake Up Korea! 어느 할아버지의 평범한 이야기 2』
