지구의 나이 45억 살, 누가, 언제, 어떻게 알아냈을까? 지구의 나이는 대략 몇 살일까? 우리는 교과서에서 배워서 답을 알고 있다. 약 45억 살이다. 화석을 탐구하고 방사능 연대 측정을 활용해서 우리는 지구의 역사를 꽤나 구체적으로 알고 있다. 하지만 처음부터 그랬을까? 사람들은 언제부터 ‘지구의 역사’에 관심을 갖게 됐을까? 이 책은 (서구에서) 지구의 기원에 관해 관심을 갖기 시작한 17세기부터 시작한다. 그 당시 지구의 나이를 밝히는 것은 역사학자와 문헌학자, 연대학자들의 관심사였다. 지구의 나이를 문헌학을 통해 알 수 있다니, 현재의 관점에서 보면 어처구니가 없는 발상이지만 당시만 해도 그게 가장 그럴듯한 접근이었다. 지질학이나 지구과학은 존재하지도 않던 시절이었으니까. 제임스 어셔는 여러 고전 문헌과 성경에 등장하는 인물들의 나이를 계산해 지구가 기원전 4004년에 탄생했다는 결과를 내놓는데, 이 때문에 지금까지도 툭하면 조롱받는 신세가 된다. 기원전 4004년이라니, 성경이라니, 현재의 상식으로는 어떻게 봐도 비과학적인 작업이지만, 이 책의 저자인 마틴 러드윅은 이를 정반대로 평가한다. 어셔 같은 17세기 역사학자들의 활동은 현대 세계에서 지구과학자들이 하는 작업과 단절되지 않고 연결되어 있으며, 그러므로 어셔는 지구의 깊은 역사라는 현대적인 관념을 이해하기에 좋은 출발점이라고. 그 당시만 해도 지구는 그냥 ‘존재하는 것’이었지, 인간 세상과 마찬가지로 그것 고유의 역사를 갖는다고 생각하진 않았다. 지구는 그저 인간들의 역사가 전개되는 배경일 뿐이었다. 하지만 지구의 기원을 밝히기 위해 연구를 이어간 역사학자, 문헌학자, 지질학자, 물리학자, 생물학자, 지구과학자의 작업을 통해 우리는 지구가 지나온 시간들과 사건들의 흔적을 알게 되었다. 이 책은 지구의 시간을 밝히는 사람들과 그들의 작업에 관한 이야기다. 그리고 존재하지 않던 분야의 과학이 탄생하고 발전하며 성숙하는 모습을 그려낸 대서사시이기도 하다. 『지구의 깊은 역사』는 한 가지 주제를 두고 다양한 이론이 경합하며 문제를 해결해내는 과정을 풍부한 자료를 제시하며 펼쳐 보인다. 이 책의 통해 독자들은 지구과학, 더 나아가서는 과학이라는 활동이 어떻게 전개되고 성립되는지 엿볼 수 있을 것이다. Earth has been witness to mammoths and dinosaurs, global ice ages, continents colliding or splitting apart, comets and asteroids crashing catastrophically to the surface, as well as the birth of humans who are curious understand it all. But how was it discovered? How was the evidence for it collected and interpreted? And what kinds of people have sought to reconstruct this past that no human witnessed or recorded? In this sweeping and magisterial book, Martin J. S. Rudwick, the premier historian of the earth sciences, tells the gripping human story of the gradual realization that the Earth's history has not only been unimaginably long but also astonishingly eventful. Rudwick begins in the seventeenth century with Archbishop James Ussher, who famously dated the creation of the cosmos to 4004 BC. His narrative then turns to the crucial period of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when inquisitive intellectuals, who came to call themselves "geologists," began to interpret rocks and fossils, mountains and volcanoes, as natural archives of Earth's history. He then shows how this geological evidence was used - and is still being used - to reconstruct a history of the earth that is as varied and unpredictable as human history itself. Along the way, Rudwick defies the popular view of this story as a conflict between science and religion and reveals that the modern scientific account of the Earth's deep history retains strong roots in Judaeo-Christian ideas. Extensively illustrated, Earth's Deep History is an engaging and impressive capstone to Rudwick's distinguished career. Though the story of the Earth is inconceivable in length, Rudwick moves with grace from the earliest imaginings of our planet's deep past to today's scientific discoveries, proving that this is a tale at once timeless and timely.
