When the old man lay on the bed, Theseus jumped on him. Theseus tied his hands and legs to the bed. Procrustes screamed for help, but it was no use.
Then Theseus said, "I know who you are. You are Procrustes. You have killed many travelers. You are a cruel man. Now it is your turn to die." Theseus killed the evil man just as Procrustes had killed so many travelers before. The people nearby heard how Theseus had tricked Procrustes. They shouted with joy! Now they knew the road was safe. The villagers asked Theseus to spend the night with them. They celebrated the death of the evil Procrustes. The next day Theseus left happy villagers. He continued on his way to Athens. --- pp.26~27 |
