고전사회학자 뒤르켕에서 경제학자 베버, 사회학자 하버마스, 문예학자 바흐친까지 세계의 석학들이 주목한 집단기억의 지형을 탐색하다! 집단기억은 역사학과 사회학을 비롯하여 문학과 영화, 대중문화 연구의 주요 주제가 되었고 기억과 사죄, 보상에 대한 기사가 심심찮게 대중 일간지의 지면을 장식하며 인문학계나 사회과학계의 핵심관심사 중 하나로 떠올랐다. 다양한 분야에서 연구되고, 또한 워낙 다양한 맥락에서 용어가 사용되다 보니 집단기억연구에 일관성이나 체계를 기대하기 어려운 것이 사실이다. 이 책은 이러한 집단기억연구 분야에서 길을 찾기 위해 분투해 온 저자 제프리 올릭의 질문과 모색, 학문적 성과를 담고 있다. 저자는 서로 다른 세력이 시간과 맥락 속에서 경합을 벌이는 장으로서 집단기억을 이해하려면 집단기억 연구에 새로운 어휘가 필요하다고 지적한다. 집단기억을 하나의 실체로 가정하거나, 물화하지 않으면서 시간성과 관계성 속에서 집단기억의 역학을 설명할 뎰념과 어휘가 필요하다는 것이다. 그는 그간의 집단기억 담론을 훑어보며 다양한 학제와 상황에서 사용된 집단기억 개념의 형성과 변천을 더듬는 동시에 브루디외와 바흐친, 엘리아스의 통찰에 기대어 기억의 장, 기억장르, 기억의 기억, 기억의 결합태 등의 용어를 제안한다. 모든 진술에는 출전을 빠짐없이 명기했으며 금기, 도덕, 매체, 권력, 인권, 공론장, 르상티망(Ressentiment), 신정론(神正論) 등 일련의 개념 설명도 담겨 있다. 개념사적 접근법으로 그간의 집단기억 담론을 훑어 나가며 집단기억이라는 용어가 변화하는 상황과 조건, 담론 속에서 어떻게 사용되며 변천했는지, 이러한 용법이 우리에게 무엇을, 어떻게 보게 하는지 혹은 무엇을, 어떻게 보지 못하게 하는지 이야기한다. In the past decade, Jeffrey Olick has established himself as one of the world’s pre-eminent sociologists of memory (and, related to this, both cultural sociology and social theory). His recent book on memory in postwar Germany, In the House of the Hangman (University of Chicago Press, 2005) has garnered a great deal of acclaim. This book collects his best essays on a range of memory related issues and adds a couple of new ones. It is more conceptually expansive than his other work and will serve as a great introduction to this important theorist. In the past quarter century, the issue of memory has not only become an increasingly important analytical category for historians, sociologists and cultural theorists, it has become pervasive in popular culture as well. Part of this is a function of the enhanced role of both narrative and representation ? the building blocks of memory, so to speak ? across the social sciences and humanities. Just as importantly, though, there has also been an increasing acceptance of the notion that the past is no longer the province of professional historians alone. Additionally, acknowledging the importance of social memory has not only provided agency to ordinary people when it comes to understanding the past, it has made conflicting interpretations of the meaning of the past more fraught, particularly in light of the terrible events of the twentieth century. Olick looks at how catastrophic, terrible pasts ? Nazi Germany, apartheid South Africa ? are remembered, but he is particularly concerned with the role that memory plays in social structures. Memory can foster any number of things ? social solidarity, nostalgia, civil war ? but it always depends on both the nature of the past and the cultures doing the remembering. Prior to his studies of individual episodes, he fully develops his theory of memory and society, working through Bergson, Halbwachs, Elias, Bakhtin, and Bourdieu.
