1952년생 역사학자. 영국 요크대학교 역사학과 교수. 케임브리지와 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 수학했으며 영국과 캐나다 대학들에서 역사와 정치를 가르쳤다. 프린스턴과 워싱턴 대학교의 방문교수이기도 하다. 1500년대에서 1800년대에 이르는 시기의 영어권 국가와 이탈리아, 프랑스의 정치 및 경제 사상사, 문화사를 연구한다. 지은 책으로 《파올로 사르피Paolo Sarpi》(1983), 《의학의 진실Bad Medicine》(마티, 2007), 《갈릴레오Galileo》(2010), 《권력, 쾌락, 이익Power, Pleasure, and Profit》(2018) 등이 있다. 〈월스트리트저널〉〈가디언〉〈타임스 리터러리 서플먼트〉〈런던 리뷰 오브 북스〉〈스펙테이터〉에 기고한다. 《과학이라는 발명The Invention of Science》(2015)으로 역사학 분야에서 학문적 깊이, 독창성, 문장력, 파급력이 높은 책을 출간한 작가에게 주는 컨딜 역사상Cundill History Prize 우수상을 받았다.
