또 하나의 퓰리처상 수상작 [타임] 선정 100대 영문소설 [[가족의 죽음]]은 제임스 에이지가 자신의 아버지를 위해 소설로 쓴 자전적 추도사이다. 에이지의 아버지는 그가 여섯 살이 되던 해에 세상을 떠났다. 그 트라우마적인 사건을 이야기의 뼈대로 삼은 이 책은 한 가족에게 찾아 온 예기치 않은 비극을 가족 구성원 하나하나가 어떻게 바라보며 어떻게 견뎌내는가를 그려 낸 작품이다. 소설가 겸 시인으로서, 영화 비평가 겸 시나리오라이터로서, 르포라이터 겸 저널리스트로서 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 미국 문화계에서 최고의 문장가로 명성을 쌓은 에이지는, 이 모든 과정을 그만이 구사할 수 있는 탁월한 문체로 담담하고 섬세하게 포착해 낸다. 이 책은 여러 각도에서 읽힌다. 죽음이 남겨 놓은 빈자리를 가족들이 필사적으로 봉합하고 치유하는 과정을 그렸다는 점에서는 ‘가족 소설’이라 읽히고, 스토아적 신자와 맹목적인 신자, 교회에 분노하는 자와 교회에는 분노하지만 영적 충동은 인정하는 자가 저마다의 관점에서 죽음에 대해 논쟁을 벌인다는 점에서는 ‘종교 소설’로 읽힐 수 있을 터이다. 또한 순진하면서도 지적이고 감수성이 예민한 “어른” 아이 루퍼스에게 아버지의 부재란 어떤 것인지를 잔잔하게 서술했다는 점에서는 ‘성장 소설’로도 읽힐 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 보다 중요한 것은 이 책이 미국인들이 가장 사랑하고 자랑스러워하는 작품으로 자리매김하고 있다는 것이다. 이 책은 1958년에 퓰리처상을 수상한 데 이어 2005년에는 [타임]이 선정한 100대 영문 소설에 포함됐으며, 또한 미국 문학의 고전만을 엄선하여 펴내는 비영리출판사인 라이브러리 오브 아메리카에서도 출판되는 등 미국 지성인들이 꼭 읽어야 하는 작품으로 손꼽히고 있다. 또한 [집으로 가는 길All the Way Home]이라는 제목으로 연극과 영화로 각색되어 무대와 스크린에 올려지기도 했다. 짧은 생애와 많지 않은 작품에도 불구하고 에이지의 글은 하버드대 문학 강의 텍스트로 채택되는 등 오늘날까지 미국 문화예술계에 커다란 영향력을 지니고 있다. Published in 1957 to wide acclaim, James Agee's "A Death in the Family" was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for literature. However, the novel had been so heavily edited by publisher and editor David McDowell that it little resembled the manuscript that James Agee had completed at the time of his death. The inaugural title of the University of Tennessee Press's scholarly edition of The Works of James Agee, this restored text of "A Death in the Family" is, in many ways, a new novel. This volume provides, for the first time, a modern critical edition of Agee's manuscript, a novel based upon his childhood and his attempts to understand the death of his father. The new introduction is a revealing nightmare rather than an idyllic reverie; the book includes ten and one-third previously omitted chapters, substitutes three finished chapters for erroneously printed drafts, and is divided into forty-five chapters rather than twenty; it is chronological and has no flashback chapters; real names of people and places are used, as are more regional speech patterns; and young Rufus (based on young James), his father, and their deep and caring relationship are far more fully developed. All are changes that showcase the intended autobiographical realism of the novel. This comprehensive edition also provides the reader with an introductory essay, a way to read the McDowell edition from it for purposes of comparison, Agee's draft of his memories of his father's death, unfinished letters to his parents, manuscript variants, and textual notes which document each part of the reconstruction. The edition has received the approval of the Committee on Scholarly Editions of the Modern Language Association. Wonderfully evocative, this exciting reconstruction of "A Death in the Family" provides a firmer sense of Agee's achievement as a writer of creative non-fiction and presents his literary genius to a new generation of readers. Michael A. Lofaro is professor of American literature and American and cultural studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He has authored and edited numerous volumes, most recently "Agee Agonistes: Essays on the Life, Legend, and Works of James Agee."
